Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is a prequel to all the previously released games. It was released in 2004 for the Playstation 2. It was the fifth Meal Gear game released, and like all the others was written and directed by Hideo Kojima.
Set during the Cold War, the player takes control of Naked Snake, the father of Solid Snake and the man who will eventually become Big Boss. Snake travels to Russia to rescue an imprisioned weapons developer. When this fails Snake must destroy a new superweapon to avoid a ending the Cold War and starting a full scale nulcear war between Russia and the United States.
Many gameplay changes have been made for Metal Gear Solid 3. Most of the gameplay now takes place deep in the soviet jungle, as opposed to the mostly urban settings of the previous installments. Snake can now use camouflage to fool the enemies, has a new advanded hand to hand fighting technique called CQC(close quarters combat) and has the ability to treat his own wounds.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater received positive reviews from gaming publications. It received a Metacritc score of 91. Users of IGN voted it the 10th best game of all time.
